aon Aon provides innovative solutions in insurance and risk management, human capital consulting, and insurance underwriting. Each industry has unique requirements.

To manage those requirements, Aon built Winbroker – a .NET application that handles accounting, policy management and issuance, reporting, underwriting, rating, and claims for the insurance programs they underwrite. Rules authored in InRule are used extensively in WinBroker for complex rating calculations and underwriting and policy form selection logic.

To enable the efficient expansion of business in the complex US market, Beazley began work in July 2008 on BeazleyPro, a major new application for managing and underwriting specialty lines risks in the US. A comprehensive system, capturing all the nuances of regulation in 50 states, the target was to replace the multiple legacy platforms with a single system to record and manage the record of risk within an 18 month timeframe, a very ambitious undertaking.

Developed in collaboration between Beazley's UK IT team and the US business, BeazleyPro is designed to be flexible and able to cover any insurance market, but the requirements of the US - with the complex interaction of state and local regulation - make the use of a rules engine such as InRule vital to its success. As part of its Systems Modernization Initiative, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Nebraska (BCBSNE) has adopted .NET as its strategic platform, is implementing an SOA infrastructure, is using BizTalk Server as the routing engine for their ESB, and is integrating InRule as its primary business rules engine.

InRule was selected to specifically define rules for routing messages in ESB and to define rules in business applications such as claims adjudication. BCBSNE identified the following factors behind their decision of InRule:

AirTran Airways wanted to simplify the process of awarding A+ Rewards Program Credits by making and easily modifying the rules for receiving credits. Their customer rewards program is challenging and complex to manage because the program is constantly evolving in partnerships and other promotions so the application had to be flexible and easy to change.

AirTran powers their A+ Rewards Program system with InRule. Rewriting the complex credit application took only one week and was completed during AirTran's evaluation period. Now rule changes can be deployed within ten minutes. In addition to the fast implementation time, AirTran chose InRule because of the simple interface for changing rules, ease of deployment, .NET compatibility, and web accessibility.
